The (JNVST), a CBSE-designed, created, and administered admissions test, is required for entrance to Class VI of the JNVs. The JNVST for Class VI is held every year across the country to choose the top 80 candidates for each JNV.
It is held in 3 parts per year, based on the organization of the state or union territory’s meeting. Students are only allowed to register for the exam once throughout their Class V year. The truth that in JNVST 2015, a total of 1,878.15 thousand candidates applied and 41.48 thousand were chosen demonstrates the level of intensity in the admissions test (i.e. approx 2 percent pass percentage). The test covers mental abilities, mathematics, and reading comprehension.

One JNV was to be founded in each district of the country, according to federal policy. To begin, two Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalayas were built in Jhajjar (Haryana) and Amravati in 1985–86. (Maharashtra). JNVs had been approved for 576 districts as of the 2015–16 educational year.
